African Batik Art

* These original and truly beautiful pieces represent several different Ugandan artists. Each artist's unique style is embodied in these contemporary paintings and batiks. Village scenes, animals, and stylized abstracts compose the subject matter for these unique works of art. The colors are natural and brilliant and each design is original and unique! These are technically not traditional batiks, but more in the line of painted fabric pieces.

In traditional batik work, melted wax is applied to cloth before the colorful dyes are applied. It is common for people to use a mixture of bees wax and paraffin wax. The bee's wax will hold to the fabric and the paraffin wax will allow cracking, which is a characteristic of some batiks. Often the cloth is dipped in the dyes, sometimes the dye is painted on the fabric. Wherever the wax has seeped through the fabric, the dye will not penetrate. Sometimes several colors are used, with a series of dyeing, drying and waxing steps. Batiks are made by brushing hot liquid wax onto a piece of cotton cloth in the desired pattern. The wax acts as a barrier to the dyes that are then applied to the cloth. The dyes are then applied to the areas that are not covered by the wax. The wax is then removed and reapplied repeatedly to mask off other areas of the cloth, and then different colors are applied. This is a very time consuming endeavor.

The fabric paintings range in size from 15" x 30" to 17" x28", and are perfect for wall-hanging or framing.

African Oil Paintings

*The oil paintings on canvas are very colorful and shiny, and some are considerably bigger than the fabric pieces, measuring 34"x60" and 34"x48". The smaller paintings are roughly the same size as the fabrics, measuring 12"x17", 18"x30" and 12"x33".
